How it's done
I create these rugs with the help of Allgauer weaving loom (Allgauer Webrahmen).
I firstly warp the loom vertically with a low stretch yarn (mixture of cotton and polyester or linen work well). This is how I warp the loom:
In this other weaving, for example, I pull the shuttles with yarns of different colors under and over the vertical threads to create the diamond pattern below.
I beat down the weaving with a comb.
The rotating heddle bar helps to raise every other vertical thread.
Materials for the small weaving frame
As a weft, i.e. the visible horizontal thread, I typically use cotton. Cotton does not stretch and is an ideal material for beginners. For larger placemats I use fine cotton, for smaller mug rugs I use thicker cotton or a mix of cotton and linen. Most recently, I have been experimenting with pure linen for the mug rugs.

My weaving arsenal
At the moment, I own three Allgauer weaving looms of different sizes with a heddle bar and one small weaving loom without a heddle bar.

For fringeless weaving, I currently use Schacht's mini loom..
